Girl Power

I love what the book has to say about sex-role stereotyping. Expectations that women should act like subordinates and men should act like leaders is a big misfortune in the work place, relationships, and teams. I am lucky enough to be in a female dominated work field, so i get to see women rise to the occasion quite often, and men in our industry tend to take a back seat as  us women get over dramatic and sensitive to issue all day long. The cooler thing, however, is that studies show that women are better at motivating groups and producing hi-quality work that men. If natural selection is indeed a truism, then women under these circumstances will eventually dominate the world of CEOs in this country  An exciting thing to consider. The only thing that may hold us back is the unfortunate stereotyping that puts women under the umbrella of subordinates. No need to be alarmed boys, with women as bosses, you may get to learn a few tricks about being reading social cues and and listening to others as the book mentions these two things as marks for women.

  1. Hi Blanch,

I agree that there is indeed a stereotype that suggests women are inferior to men, especially in business; however, it is awesome that you work in a field that goes against this assumption. I am fortunate to have a mother who has set a wonderful example of how successful a woman can become in a predominantly male field. Growing up with a driven, hard-working mother has therefore allowed me to set high expectations for myself in terms of professional goals and achievements. Furthermore, the progression women in America continue to make each year makes these goals more attainable than in decades past as now it is not so shocking to see a woman hold a position of power in a working environment.

  2. Hey Blanch Mortine,

I enjoyed reading your women empowering post and the personal examples you listed! I found myself agreeing with the man points you addressed and I have had similar life experiences. Like you touched upon I feel women are more in tune with themselves and those around them, which only makes it easier to communicate and effectively motivate others; in the work force or outside it. While men get straight to the point, women often sugar coat and end with a positive spin to help others feel good about themselves and push them to work harder or maintain a positive work environment.

Great post! Hope you had a good weekend!

  3. You're blog was very interesting! You're title is what lured me and the context was what kept me reading till the end. I didn't read the sex-role stereotyping in complete detail, but your blog explained it. I also agree that women are expected to act as men's subordinates. As times are changing, women are gradually becoming more dominant in the work force. Like you stated, it is difficult for women to rise because of the stereotypes. Yet, if men and women work together in higher positions, then diversity is valued. The more brains there are in an operation, the more opportunities for success.
