An Expert Opinion

I am partial to the Symposium style of problem presentation. I like this style because I find the masses to be quite stupid and self centered at times. A symposium is a way to not only discuss a problem and it's possible solutions, but it is a way to educate those whom the issue concerns. In light of the recent presidential election I have developed an awareness of how uneducated we are because of how our human nature leads us to our information. I think when it comes to making a decision about a problem that likely effects many people in different ways, those people who are effected need to have as much information as possible. Needless to say I think this information needs to be based on fact and come from very credible sources on the issue and presented in a way that is planned and easy for the stakeholders to understand. This can be a great way to get insight to long and short term theories on the results of problems and implementation of solutions. Because a symposium is planned and presented by experts, and has no interruption from heated stakeholders, it is a great form of problem analysis. When an audience knows its an audience, they are more liekely to listen to information instead of prepare their own refutes and ill planned announcements.

  1. Hi blanch mortine,

I found your post this week really interesting. I had never really thought of the symposium style of presenting a problem to be beneficial, but after reading your post, I have to agree with you. Sometimes people really don't know what they are talking about, so having a panel of experts on a topic discuss it and get in depth during the discussion is beneficial because it helps educate those who may not be as knowledgeable on the specific issue. The example you used with the recent presidential election was great, and it really made your point more logical and agreeable. I also have to agree with you that this method is very effective because there are no interruptions from the audience members, which allows the problem to be thoroughly discussed. Nice job on your post!

  2. Good afternoon Blanch, I found the reason for post justifiable. I liked your opening line and how you say that you find the masses to be stupid at times. I will agree with you on your statement "I think when it comes to making a decision about a problem that likely effects many people in different ways, those people who are effected need to have as much information as possible." For example the recent Prop 30 that nearly affected many here at SJSU surely should have had as much information about the issue as possible so they could have made a sound choice. However what about the people that it does not affect. What about the the person who does not go to school or has kids that it could have affected. Surely they must have as the same amount of information as others so they themselves can make a sound choice.
I will agree that symposium is great method to use and I recently saw this in the election as well.

  3. Hi Midwest Digress,
I enjoyed reading your post and thoughts on why you prefer the symposium style of problem presentation. I was not familiar with this style prior to reading the chapter but you make some good points as to why this method would be beneficial to group conflict resolution. I definitely agree with you that it is necessary to consider as much information as possible when attempting to solve a problem, which is why the symposium style works well. The only downfall I can really identify with this method is that it may be difficult for any group to obtain expert advice on the issue they are trying to address.
